Destination Success Event!
More than 500 Destination 2010 (D2010) students, families, special guests, and staff came together for the D2010 Final Celebration – Destination Success! event at Nicollet Island Pavilion on June 15. Guests enjoyed food, live music, and beautiful weather while mingling and congratulating students on their accomplishments.

D2010 Program Manager Kathleen O'Donnell opened the program, followed by The Minneapolis Foundation's President and CEO, Sandra Vargas. She offered her congratulations and support for the D2010 students. D2010 staff members Kim Williams and Devon Gilchrist thanked all of the donors and partners for their support, as well as liaisons and former staff. Karen Kelley-Ariwoola, The Minneapolis Foundation’s Vice President of Community Philanthropy, paid a special tribute to the program’s founding members: Dr. Emmett Carson, former Minneapolis Foundation President and CEO; Dr. Carol Johnson, Minneapolis Public Schools Superintendent; Dr. Patricia Harvey, former St. Paul Public Schools Superintendent; and Richard McFarland former Minneapolis Foundation Board President.

The program’s keynote speaker was WCCO-TV anchorwoman Angela Davis, who spoke to the students about remaining joyful and persevering in the face of adversity. Following her speech, University of Minnesota student group Voices Merging performed spoken word pieces, including one prepared especially for the event. Destination 2010 students Eric Simmons, Rayneisha Varner, Miguel Castell-Victorio, and Agustina Miranda contributed by sharing how being in D2010 has impacted their lives and decisions about college. To close the program, a special guest – human rights activist Nontombi Naomi Tutu – gathered the students onstage for a blessing and send-off.

Following the program, guests offered their final farewells, wishing students the best of luck, and especially congratulations, on entering this next stage of their lives.
